In the first Industry Update of 2021, Discover Puerto Rico (Discover) and top tourism officials reveal that they are paving the way for a brighter tourism future for the island. The organisation, along with Hon. Manual Cidre will work together to jumpstart tourism in the island and achieve success in 2021. Cidre is the designated Secretary of the Department of Economic Development and Commerce (DDEC).
Jose Suarez, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Discover Puerto Rico, made mention of the crises that the island overcame in the past few years. He explained that that the island has to rebound from COVID-19 as well as previous events. His approach to ensure that the island maintains its competitive advantage, is to “compete for the attention” of future travellers. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of investing and working together as an industry.

Research has shown that that tourism is likely to pick up in late 2021. And, the island is already making its moves. The tourism organisation recently received Federal Aid (from the United States) through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. The funding will support the island’s tourism recovery and promote safe travel.
The quest to bring back visitors to Puerto Rico is an island wide effort. Organisations such as Foundation for Puerto Rico and DigheonTech are working with Discover Puerto Rico. These partnerships are crucial to ensuring that the island is safe and thus protects citizens, residents and visitors from existing and new diseases.

He notes the unique experiences; natural resources; and rich and vibrant culture are examples of why the island’s “value proposition is strong and appealing.” The island has seen many challenges and disasters and knows what it has to do to survive and achieve success.
