The government of Guyana will be expanding the Eugene F Correia International Airport (Ogle Airport). This is due to major developments in Guyana’s aviation and tourism sectors. The airport, which has become a major travel hub in South America, receives more than 200 arrivals per day.
This news was revealed on Sunday during the launch of Caribbean Airlines’ inaugural flight from Ogle Airport to Paramaribo, Suriname. The new flight is a twice weekly service which will fly on Sundays and Fridays. On Sundays, flight BW383 will depart Ogle at 11:55 a.m., whilst on Fridays, it will depart at 10:45 a.m.. On Sundays, BW384 will depart Suriname at 12:50 p.m. and on Fridays, it will depart at 13.50 p.m.
Minister of Public Works, Bishop Juan Edghill offered background into the decision. He further explained that operators who service the airport have applied for permission to expand their fleets to meet growing demand. Because there are more flights and there is the possibility of new routes, the operators were granted permission to expand. Caribbean Airlines was one of these operators and their new flight service is an example of the growing route network through Guyana.
The minister also shared that there will be several changes which will benefit passengers and flight crews. There will be:
- additional seating accommodations
- a wider range of duty-free shops
- an executive lounge for executive travel and
- a longer runway.
He also mentioned that it is important to undertake regular maintenance to ensure that the country’s airports can handle large aircraft and deliver top-notch service. Additionally, to meet this growing demand, the Guyana government has plans to build a second terminal the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.
