It’s whale watching season in the Dominican Republic and we are excited! The Ministry of the Environment in the Dominican Republic recently announced that the season will begin on January 15th and will run until March 31st for Samana Bay and until April 15th for the Banco de la Plata. This year’s season is called “ A dance that perpetuates the species” and adequately describes the graceful acrobatics of the whales in the water.
Whale Watching in the Dominican Republic
Many travellers take advantage of the whale watching excursions in the Dominican Republic which offer views of humpback whales in their natural element. The excursions are especially popular in Samana and Puerto Plata, which are located on the northern coast of the country. Banco de la Plata in Puerto Plara is a protected area which aims to encourage and ensure the conservation of whales and the habitats in which they live.
To ensure a sustainable approach to the management of the whale watching industry, a new agreement was signed just before the start of the 2022 season. The Marine Mammal Observation Management Agreement 2022 is an inter-institutional agreement that signals the commitment of various ministries and entities to the cause. Representatives from the Ministry of Tourism; the Navy; Santa Barbara de Samana; Center for the Conservation and Eco-Development of the Bay of Samaná and its Environment among others added their signatures to the document.
